The National Sports Museum is one of the most amazing places you can visit in Melbourne. It is located at the Melbourne Cricket Ground only a few minutes from the city, and is easily accessed by public transport.

A history of AFL...

This section is all about what made AFL over the years. You can even relive some outstanding moments in AFL through an interactive video that allows you to re-watch snippets of specific football matches.

...and James Hird in 3D!

Hirdy!

The 3D hologram of James Hird will no doubt be popular now that it is football season. You can watch James Hird tell you about his experience as a football player for Essendon and what impact it had on his life. It is both a thrilling and moving story which can be appreciated by everyone, not only Essendon fans.

Sports Documentaries on NSM Cinema Sport

This 34-seat movie theatre is currently screening three 12 minute documentaries. We saw Nerves of Steel and Peter Brock - both great documentaries, even for people who are not particularly passionate about sports.

Documentaries showing are:

Bustin’ Down The Door – (12 mins)
In 1975 a group of Australian and South African surfers revolutionised their sport.  Surfing was never to be the same again.

Nerves of Steel – abridged version (11 mins)
Four daring young Australian women threw themselves headfirst into the dangerous sport of Skeleton.  Could a bold scientific experiment lead to Winter Olympic glory?

Peter Brock – King Of The Mountain (12 mins)
Brock’s domination of the Mount Panorama Circuit at Bathurst is legendary.
Discover the relationship between the racing car driver and the mountain.

It's Game On!

This was definitely one of the most interesting sections of the museum. Whether you are a kid or an adult or both (like me), you will love the interactive gallery. You can try a variety of sports including netball, cricket, basketball, bike riding, football, soccer and archery.

Tip: wear runners - you don't want your shoe flying away with the football as you kick.
